OVERVIEW

The aside, promoted.

A theme for writing with a running commentary. Side notes sit in the margin at reading width and fold into the flow on a phone, without losing their order.

Some writing is two arguments at once: the main line and the commentary running beside it. Footnotes handle that badly, because they move the second argument to the end of the page.

Here the aside sits level with the sentence that prompted it. On a narrow screen it folds into the flow in the right place, numbered so the reader can tell it apart from the main text.

My marginalia finally has somewhere to live.

— An essayist

WHAT YOU GET

Two arguments, one column.

Level side notes

Asides sit beside the sentence that raised them and stay level as the reader scrolls past.

Ordered folding

On narrow screens notes fold into the flow at the right point, numbered so they read as commentary rather than interruption.

Quotable passages

Selecting a passage offers a link straight to it, so a reader can point at one paragraph rather than the whole essay.

Revision notes

A dated note at the foot of revised pieces explaining what changed and why.
